| Bridging the Gap ~ your platform to CLIL |
•Gilly Dempster |
|
| English is a means to communicate and more; the key to unlock the door and open the world. The inclusion of cross-curricular themes, being built into the learning process, allows a whole new vista to appear on the horizon. As language teachers, the addition of such subjects in textbooks (and therefore in teaching programs) was something to rejoice in. Here was something out learners could really get their teeth into. Like life, education is always evolving and now there’s CLIL promising to take our learners further… ‘to go boldly!’ Today’s presenter will show how you can teach subjects like science, history and geography to not only breakthrough into the mysterious world of CLIL, but once and for all bridge the gap: Opening up the world of English and giving students a ‘bird’s eye view.’ |

In the language classroom, there is seldom enough time for students to acquire all the vocabulary and structures they need to function in a second language. One of the roles of teachers is to move students from teacher dependence to independent learning so that students are better able to learn on their own.
This presentation discusses this, using a new series, Starship English, as an example of how teachers can deal with three issues that have the greatest impact on student learning: large class sizes; mixed classes of with students of differing abilities; and the use of individual, pair and small group work. |

| Content Language Integrated Learning for children up to 11 |
•Mary Slattery |
|
In English lessons with children up to age 11 it is important to encourage general, cognitive and educational development. When our teaching of this age group has a CLIL focus we are
• extending our lesson content to link with other subject areas
• connecting with concepts that children are already familiar with
• providing children with additional language
In this session I will talk about these three areas as well as looking at sample materials and lesson extracts that keep language lessons engaging and interactive. |

| Applying CLIL in Taiwan Language Schools |

| CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) advocates that English should be used throughout a school's curriculum, rather than being taught solely as a discrete language subject. The advantage of choosing the CLIL method rather than a traditional EFL method lies in the amount of extracurricular exposure children have. Through CLIL, children learn English in a more natural, fun, and successful way. This workshop looks at designing reusable curricula that include the core CLIL values and which are suitable for young English language learners in Taiwan. |

| Get Ready to Move Your Students! |
•Sandra Wu |
|
| You can expect a high-energy presentation that will demonstrate how to move your students’ minds, bodies and emotions. By moving students’ minds, you can intellectually engage them in the learning process; stimulating their critical thinking skills. By moving students’ bodies, students learn by doing, it gets them out of the chairs and makes learning a physical experience. By moving students’ emotions, they develop positive attitudes towards language learning and build upbtheir confidence in a non-threatening environment. Get ready to move your students by doing some thinking, puzzles, shouting, TPR, dancing, spinning, singing and stories because as research suggests when the fun stops, the learning stops! |

| CBI Model:A Dual Design Syllabus for Improved English Lessons |
•Torben K. Nielsen |
|
In the forever changing and dynamic ELT field, there are always new trends towards achieving stronger learning goals and increasing student-motivation associated with normal class English language instruction. Across Asia, a recent need to have a dual focus on teaching both language and content areas is rising, and therefore to be ‘cutting-edge’ English Language Instructors, we have to develop and understand the characteristics of such a syllabus and offer appropriate strategies and techniques for dealing with them for a more involved and multi-focused English class.
The presenter will look at ways of balancing the dual focus on language and content-based instruction (CBI) as well as introduce a helpful framework for designing content-based courses and lessons. This workshop will examine several useful activity types, syllabus design and consider how to integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing in content-based instruction for students. Activities are taken from the exciting new series from Heinle, a part of Cengage Learning, Check it out! and ELT Advantage Online Teacher Training Courses. Finally, teachers will also gain an insight into the benefits of extensive reading by using the latest graded readers available to support such an improved English syllabus. |
