After her family relocates to the small country town of Lewisburg, Tennessee, Hilary Thompson, who has lived in a city the whole thirteen years of her life, feels as if her world has stopped turning. She begins working at the neighboring stables owned by Susan Collins and meets Satan, a wild mustang stallion who seems as lonely and out-of-place in his new surroundings as she is in hers. When Susan's son, Jeremy, fails to tame Satan, his mother threatens to sell the horse at an auction where he might end up in a slaughterhouse. Fearful for the future of the beautiful animal, Hilary resolves to tame him. But can a girl who knows nothing about horses gain the trust of an aggressive mustang that no one else has been able to train? Will she be able to keep her efforts a secret? As Hilary spends increasingly more time with him, her affection for the mustang grows, and his develops for her. Through the bond they form, Hilary learns about horses, people, and the greatest lesson of all, unconditional love.
