Dorit, Roy, and Riley illuminate how bugs kill bugs. Bacteriocins are proteins produced by certain species of bacteria that are toxic to related strains of those bacteria. Interest in the therapeutic potential of the bacteriocins has grown and gained urgency in the context of the growing realization that we are reaching the end of the conventional antibiotic era as the clinical and economic costs of antibiotic resistance continue to mount and the pipeline for new antibiotic classes slows to a trickle. The emergence of human and animal pathogens resistant to one or more antibiotics coupled with the realization of the damage inflicted by broad-spectrum antibiotics on the commensal biome has led to an increased focus on bacteriocin modes of action. They intend this volume to be a step in the direction of confronting and solving both the challenges of evolving novel antibiotics and of outpacing emerging resistance.
