有一天，一隻長相奇特的陌生動物拖著一個大大的行李箱，翻山越嶺來到這裡，引起其他動物的關切與好奇：他為什麼到這裡來？他從什麼地方來？行李箱裡面到底有什麼？這隻動物回答，他的箱子裡有一個茶杯、一張桌子、一把椅子，他說他從很遠很遠的地方來，走了很久很久的路，很累很累了，需要休息一下。就在這隻筋疲力盡的動物沉睡時，小鳥、兔子、狐狸對他和他的箱子議論紛紛，大家實在無法相信他所說的話，於是，狐狸動手打開了行李箱……
故事中不知名的陌生動物象徵著外來者、陌生人，他可能是為了逃離貧窮或戰爭、冒著巨大風險前來尋求安定與庇護的移民或難民，也可能是社區裡新搬來的鄰居或學期中剛轉學來的新同學，甚至是剛加入團體的新成員……作者巧妙的以簡單的對話帶出故事，傳達出真誠、希望與仁慈，以及如何善待需要幫助的人。
英國圖畫書作家克里斯．內勒–巴列斯特羅斯（Chris Naylor-Ballesteros）以鉛筆、墨水和水彩描繪，簡潔的構圖、流暢的線條，加上畫面上大量的留白，讓焦點集中在四隻動物和行李箱上；他用了紅、橘、黃、綠四種顏色分別代表不同的動物，同樣也用這四種顏色的文字來對應他們之間的對話，讓人一目了然；另以柔和的棕色調呈現陌生動物過去的生活景象，與現實區隔，就像泛黃的老照片一樣，代表了往日的回憶。
